Streptococcus pneumoniae bacteria is one of the most common causes of bacterial pneumonia.

While pneumonia is a serious disease, it is preventable and one of the options is vaccination.

  • Slide Title

When you have pneumonia, the air sacs (alveoli) in your lungs become inflamed and fill up with fluid or pus.

  • Slide Title

When the air sacs are flooded, it is hard for oxygen to get into the bloodstream and it may fall to a dangerously low level in the body.

  • Slide Title

Pneumonia symptoms include coughing, fever, and trouble breathing.

  • Slide Title

Older people may show more subtle symptoms, such as confusion.

  • Slide Title

    Pneumonia is preventable.

Reduce the risk of getting pneumonia:

    • Wash hands regularly
    • Eat right, stay fit and get plenty of rest
    • Avoid people with symptoms of respiratory diseases
    • Stop smoking

You can also get vaccinated. Speak to your doctor about pneumococcal vaccination and how else to reduce your risk of getting pneumonia.
